Omaha Hi-Lo is by far the most exciting poker variation there is. It is fast and has deferent strategies, which also makes it relatively complex for a newcomer.
Most important
What makes Omaha Hi-Lo a game to be aware of is the fact that the pot is devided into Hi hands and Low hands. this means that even though you have a good hand you most probable have to share the pot with one or more players. This can often result into you actually loosing by playing in a pot even though you had a great low hand if you have to share the low pot with other players who had a similar hand.
Highest Low hand
The highest Low hand that you can get in Omaha Hi-Lo is A;2;3;4;5. Although you get dealt 4 cards in your hand you can only use 2 to make the low and 3 cards must come from the 5 cards dealt on the table. Therefore many players goes crazy if they have a A;2 in their hand, thinking they just hit the jackpot. Then they start to raise and completely forget that there still has to be 3 low cards dealt before they actually have won the pot.
The Ideal hand
The ideal hand to have in Omaha is to have a hand that can take the entire pot. That will mean that you will have to take both the high and the low. Because you have 4 cards in your hand and you can use any 2 in combination for low or high. The ideal hand will therefore be a hand with wich you can make a straight, flush or a full house and the best possible low. Pairs often bites the dust so it not a strong hand to play. |
